Job Overview
Location: Richmond Hill, Ontario
Structure: Detached bungalow with red brick exterior
Problem: Suspected squirrel activity in the attic during early morning hours
Service: Humane squirrel removal and full roofline exclusion
Visits: Two visits
Summary
We were contacted regarding early morning attic noise consistent with squirrel activity. A full roof inspection identified widespread openings along the drip edge that allowed access into the attic space. Humane removal was completed using a one-way door, followed by full perimeter exclusion to prevent re-entry.
Background / Property Context
The property is a detached bungalow with an asphalt shingle roof and aluminum eavestrough system. The roofline design included long, continuous drip edge sections that had deteriorated and lifted over time, creating accessible gaps along much of the perimeter.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated scratching and movement sounds coming from the attic, most noticeable in the early morning. They were concerned about ongoing wildlife entry and potential damage to the roof structure.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our team completed a full exterior roof inspection. Open gaps were visible along large sections of the drip edge. In several areas, roofing materials were lifted or deteriorated, exposing the roof edge and underlying wood. These openings were consistent with squirrel access points. No interior inspection was required at this stage.

Cause Analysis
Drip edge gaps can form over time due to weather exposure, material fatigue, and roof settling. Once openings develop, squirrels are able to widen them using repeated entry and exit. Continuous roofline gaps increase the likelihood of attic access, especially on low-slope bungalow roofs.
Treatment / Removal
A humane one-way door was installed at the identified primary access point to allow squirrels to exit the attic without re-entry. No trapping or lethal methods were used. The system was left in place to ensure all animals had vacated the attic space.
Exclusion & Repairs
Following confirmation of no further activity, galvanized steel mesh was installed along approximately 138 feet of the roof drip edge. The mesh was secured beneath the roofing material and integrated with the existing eavestrough system to close all accessible gaps. After the exclusion period, the one-way door was removed and the opening permanently sealed.

Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, the homeowner reported no additional noise or activity. The exclusion work was inspected and confirmed secure. The one-way door had served its purpose and was removed. No further wildlife issues were reported following completion.

Technician Notes
Richard conducted both visits, including the full roof inspection, installation of the one-way door, and final exclusion work. All roofline gaps identified during the inspection were addressed. Work was completed safely with attention to long-term prevention rather than temporary repair.
